great article about Split and islands
" You
can use the seaside city of Split as a jumping off point for the famed Dalmatian
Islands, but why not stay for a while to take in its revived waterfront Riva,
ancient palace and warm Mediterranean feel?"
"Like many visitors, I've come to Split as a jumping-off point to the
Dalmatian Islands, the ragged collection of 926 islands, islets and rocks along
the central and southern coast of Croatia. But the bad news that my ship isn't
sailing – thanks to the postponement of the popular Vis Regatta – has
inadvertently meant good news: I'll have more time to stroll Split's palm-lined
waterfront promenade (known here as the Riva) and step deep into the bowels of
Diocletian's Palace, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before my ferry sails
the Adriatic for Hvar.
Pricey yachts, sleek sailboats and small fishing boats bob next to the
pedestrian-only Riva where Croatians drink in the Mediterranean scenery while
indulging in their favourite pastime (at least for now) – coffee and cigarettes
– at the many cafés that line the outer walls of the palace."
